Finding Free Local Leads with Reverse Prospecting

Posted in Leads

Finding good local leads is difficult enough, but free local leads…now that’s a goldmine! Before I go into how this is done, let’s see how the ‘hacks’ have been doing it (and pissing people off in the process).

The Old WayReverse Prospecting

Let’s say you wanted to advertise your business through the local newspaper or Penny Saver classifieds section. You place an ad for free or for a small cost, publish your phone number in your ad, and wait for the phone to ring.

When it finally rings, you’re ecstatic! But within a minute into the call, you realize the person on the other end of the phone isn’t interested in your business, but actually trying to pitch you on theirs!

How often has that worked on you? Ummm….Never!

But there is a way to reverse prospect without angering the other person.

New Reverse Prospecting That Works

The basic foundation of the reverse prospecting method is still sound - you connect with people who are already in a network marketing business, and are actively trying to promote it. So you have someone who believes in network marketing already, and who’s working their business! That’s a high value lead no matter which company you’re in. And, did I mention that they’re local? Ohhh…icing on the cake :o)

Where to Find Free Local Leads

You can find local network marketing leads in your local newspaper, your local news station’s website, Craigslist, smaller publications like the Penny Saver, and The Thrifty Nickel, or even by collecting business cards from store bulletin boards, fish bowls, and networking events, and fairs.

What to Say

This is where most people fall down, so pay attention. Do NOT pitch them! Period. But, be honest. Say something like this…

I don’t want to mislead you. I already have a network marketing business I’m happy with, but I’m always looking for ways to advance my business, as I’m sure you are too. How is your advertising working for you? Are there other forms of prospecting that you’ve gotten personal enrollees from?

Be personable and genuinely interested in their results. You don’t have to ask them the money question - you can tell by their responses if they are doing well or not. If they seem generally satisfied with their company and their income, then keep in contact as colleagues sharing about what works and doesn’t in the industry.

But, if they seem unhappy with their results, their income, or their company - as most people will - then tell them what’s been working for you. Share with them the size of your group, or the marketing methods you use, or something great about the products, or a recent success story in your organization. No matter what, always stay positive. People are drawn to positive people. And, they will inevitably ask what company you’re with. Tell them and let them know that you’d be happy to show them what you’re doing and why its working so well.

That is the most non-confrontational way to reverse prospect. You will be surprised with how much dissatisfaction there is out there, so when you listen, are interested in their stories and results, you will gain a new friend in the industry and possibly a new enrollee!

Good tips. I imagine even with out directly pitching them you would still need to run through do not call.
